Dental Bridge Sunshine Coast
A natural-looking fix for missing teeth, from a local Sunshine Coast dentist
If you’ve lost a tooth (or a few) and you’re weighing up your options, a dental bridge is one of the most reliable ways to close the gap. At CJ Dentistry in Alexandra Headland, we’ve been fitting bridges for Sunshine Coast families for decades, and Dr Peter Jorgensen has a particular love for the detailed crown-and-bridge work that goes into getting them right.
What a dental bridge actually does?
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with a custom-made false tooth (or teeth) anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the gap, or to dental implants. Done well, it restores your bite, protects the shape of your face, stops your remaining teeth from drifting, and gives you back a smile you don’t think twice about.
Types of dental bridges we offer
We offer four types of dental bridges, and the right choice depends on where the gap is, how many teeth are missing, and the health of the surrounding teeth.
- Traditional bridges are the most common. A false tooth sits between two dental crowns, which are bonded to the prepared teeth on either side of the gap.
- Cantilever bridges work when there's only one natural tooth next to the gap to anchor to.
- Maryland bridges are often used for front teeth. They're bonded to the back of the neighbouring teeth with minimal preparation, which means more of your healthy tooth structure stays intact.
- Implant-supported bridges are anchored to dental implants instead of natural teeth. They're the strongest option for replacing several teeth in a row and don't put any load on surrounding teeth.
Bridge or implant? A quick, honest comparison
Bridges and implants both replace missing teeth, but they suit different situations. A traditional bridge is usually faster (around two weeks, no surgery) and has a lower upfront cost. An implant takes longer because it needs to fuse with the jawbone, but it stands on its own without involving the neighbouring teeth and tends to last longer.
In your first appointment, we’ll talk you through which option makes the most sense for your mouth, your budget, and how long you want the result to last.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are dental bridges, and why are they necessary?
A dental bridge is a false tooth (or set of teeth) fixed permanently into the gap left by missing teeth. They’re not just cosmetic. When a tooth goes missing, the teeth on either side start to drift, your bite changes, and the bone underneath the gap can shrink over time. A bridge stops that chain reaction, restores normal chewing, and keeps your smile looking like your smile.
What types of dental bridges are available?
There are four main types. Traditional bridges use crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap to hold a false tooth in place. Cantilever bridges anchor to just one neighbouring tooth, useful when there’s only one healthy tooth next to the gap. Maryland bridges bond to the back of the adjacent teeth and are often used for front teeth, where appearance matters most. Implant-supported bridges rest on dental implants rather than natural teeth, which is usually the best option when several teeth in a row are missing.
How do crowns support dental bridges?
In a traditional bridge, the crowns are the anchors. Your dentist prepares the two teeth on either side of the gap, then fits custom-made crowns over them. Those crowns are fused to the false tooth in the middle, so the whole thing acts as one piece. The crowns carry the bite force and hold the false tooth securely in place.
What are the advantages of dental bridges compared to other restoration methods?
Compared to a partial denture, a bridge is fixed (so it doesn’t come out at night), feels more like a natural tooth, and lets you eat without worrying about slippage. Compared to an implant, a traditional bridge is faster (often around two weeks from start to finish), doesn’t involve surgery, and usually costs less upfront. The right choice depends on the health of your surrounding teeth and how long you want the result to last, which we’ll discuss at your first visit.
Which dental practices on the Sunshine Coast offer dental bridges?
Most general and cosmetic dental clinics on the Sunshine Coast offer some form of dental bridge work, but the experience and materials vary. When you’re choosing where to go, look for a practice that fits all four bridge types (so you’re not pushed into the only option they offer), uses a quality local dental lab, has a dentist with strong crown and bridge experience, and takes the time to walk you through your options. At CJ Dentistry, Dr Peter Jorgensen is experienced in doing detailed crown and bridge work, and we’d be happy to give you an honest assessment at a consultation.
