Dental Fillings Sunshine Coast

Restore Your Teeth with Trusted Filling Treatments at CJ Dentistry

When a tooth has been affected by decay, a chip, or wear over time, a dental filling is one of the most reliable ways to bring it back to full strength. At Currey & Jorgensen Dentistry in Alexandra Headland, we’ve been providing fillings for Sunshine Coast families for decades. Our experienced dental team uses materials that bond well with natural teeth, look right at home in your smile, and hold up to everyday use.

Whether it’s your first filling or a replacement for an older one that’s starting to wear, our friendly team will talk you through what’s happening with your tooth, your options, and what to expect.

What Are Dental Fillings and Why Do They Matter?

A dental filling restores the shape, function, and strength of a tooth after tooth structure has been lost. The most common reason is decay, but fillings are also used to repair small chips, cracks, or areas of wear. Once your dentist has carefully removed the affected area, the filling material takes its place, sealing the tooth and protecting it from further damage.

Getting a filling on time matters. Small areas of decay are quick and straightforward to treat, but if left untreated, they can spread deeper into the tooth and reach the nerve. At that point, you’re often looking at a root canal or even an extraction instead of a simple filling. Regular check-ups at our Sunshine Coast clinic help catch these issues early, which means smaller treatments, less time in the chair, and lower costs over the long run.

Types of Dental Fillings We Offer

Not every filling needs to be the same material. The right choice depends on where the tooth is in your mouth, how much tooth structure is involved, how the tooth bites against its neighbours, and what you’d prefer in terms of appearance and longevity. At CJ Dentistry, we offer three main types of fillings.

White Composite Resin Fillings

Composite resin is the most popular filling material we provide, and for good reason. It’s tooth-coloured, bonds directly to the tooth surface, and is virtually invisible once placed. That makes it a great option for front teeth or anywhere you’d rather not see metal when you smile or laugh.

Composite is also conservative, meaning we can preserve more of your natural tooth compared to older filling techniques. It’s a strong, practical choice for most everyday fillings.

Porcelain Fillings

Porcelain fillings are both strong and beautifully colour-matched to blend with your natural teeth. They’re a good fit for larger restorations where strength and appearance both matter. Porcelain holds its colour well over time and resists staining, which is something patients often appreciate.

Gold Fillings

Gold is the most durable long-term filling option available. It stands up exceptionally well to chewing forces and tends to outlast other materials, which is why some patients still choose it for back teeth where strength is the priority. Your dentist will discuss whether gold is a good option for your tooth.

If you’re not sure which material is right for you, we’ll have that conversation together at your appointment. There’s no single “best” filling. There’s the best one for your tooth, your bite, and your preferences.

The Dental Filling Procedure: What to Expect

If you’ve never had a filling before, or it’s been a while, it’s normal to feel a bit unsure about what’s involved. Here’s how a typical filling appointment runs at our Alexandra Headland clinic.

Before Your Appointment

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare. Brush your teeth as usual and let our team know if you’ve had any reactions to local anaesthetic in the past, or if you’re particularly anxious about dental work. We treat plenty of nervous patients, and we’ll take the time to make sure you feel comfortable before we start.

During the Procedure

Your dentist will start by checking the tooth and confirming the plan with you. In most cases, we’ll use a local anaesthetic to numb the area, making the procedure painless. Once the tooth is numb, we’ll gently remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and thoroughly clean the area.

Next, we’ll place the filling material. With composite resin, this involves bonding the material directly to the tooth in layers, shaping it to match the tooth’s natural contours, and curing it with a special light. Porcelain and gold fillings may involve a slightly different process, which your dentist will explain on the day. Finally, we’ll check your bite and make small adjustments so the tooth feels normal when you chew.

Most simple fillings take around 30 to 60 minutes from start to finish, though larger or more complex restorations can take longer.

After Your Filling

You can usually get on with your day straight away, though if you’ve had a local anaesthetic, it’s a good idea to avoid hot drinks or chewing until the numbness wears off (usually a couple of hours). Some mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal in the first few days and almost always settles on its own.

Caring for Your Fillings

A good filling can last for several years, sometimes much longer, depending on the material used and how it’s cared for. The materials we use at CJ Dentistry are hardwearing and bond strongly with natural teeth, but a few simple habits will help you get the most out of your investment.

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes. Avoid using your teeth as tools (opening packets, biting nails, chewing ice) since this is a common way fillings chip or fail early. If you grind your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about a night guard, which can protect both your fillings and your natural teeth from wear.

Keep up with your regular check-ups, too. At your appointments, we’ll check the condition of your fillings and let you know if any are starting to wear or leak. Replacing a filling before it fails is much simpler than dealing with new decay underneath one that’s broken down.

If You Notice a Problem

Give us a call if you notice any of the following:

  • Sharp pain when biting down
  • Sensitivity that lingers rather than settling within a few days
  • A rough edge you can feel with your tongue
  • A piece of the filling has chipped or come out
  • The tooth feels different from how it did right after the appointment

These issues are usually quick to resolve, especially if we catch them early.

Lost or Broken Filling? We Can Help

A broken or lost filling can be uncomfortable and leave the tooth underneath exposed to bacteria and further damage. If this happens to you, contact our clinic as soon as you can. We prioritise urgent dental issues and aim to offer same-day appointments wherever possible. Our standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and we do our best to accommodate emergencies outside these times. Please call to discuss your situation, and we’ll work out the best next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

At CJ Dentistry, we offer white fillings (porcelain or composite resin) and gold fillings. Composite resin is the most popular option because it’s tooth-coloured, bonds directly to the tooth, and looks virtually invisible. Porcelain is strong and colour-matched for a natural finish, while gold is the most durable long-term option. Your dentist will recommend the right material based on the tooth being treated, your bite, and your preferences.

The cost of a filling depends on the material used, the size of the filling, and which tooth is being treated, so it’s hard to give an accurate figure without seeing your tooth first. Our team is happy to talk you through the expected costs after your initial exam. As a starting point, a standard initial exam at CJ Dentistry costs $86, a more complex initial exam costs $122, and an OPG x-ray (if needed) costs $152. We accept all major health funds, offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming, and offer flexible payment plans.

A filling appointment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. Your dentist will numb the area with local anaesthetic, gently remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth, clean the area, and place the filling material. With composite resin, the material is applied in layers and cured with a special light. Your dentist will then shape the filling, check your bite, and make any adjustments so the tooth feels comfortable when you chew.

You can usually get on with your day straight after a filling, though it’s best to wait until the numbness wears off before eating or drinking hot things. Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal and almost always settles on its own. Long-term, brush twice a day, floss daily, avoid using your teeth as tools, and keep up with regular check-ups so we can spot any issues with your fillings before they become bigger problems.

The materials we use are hardwearing and bond strongly to natural teeth, so it will typically be several years before a filling needs to be replaced. We regularly check the condition of all restorations at your check-ups and recommend replacement before they begin to leak or wear, helping prevent new decay from developing underneath.
