Children's Dentist Sunshine Coast
Gentle, Family-Focused Dental Care for Kids of All Ages
Looking for a children’s dentist on the Sunshine Coast that your whole family can feel comfortable with? Welcome to Currey & Jorgensen Dentistry, an Alexandra Headland practice that’s been looking after local kids and their parents for decades. Our approach to children’s dentistry is built around gentle, preventive dental care, from your child’s first dental visit at age one through to teen check-ups and mouthguards for junior sport.
CJ Dentistry is a registered provider under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which means eligible children can access up to $1,052 worth of bulk-billed dental treatment over two calendar years. We accept all major health funds with on-the-spot HICAPS claiming, so families know exactly where they stand before treatment begins.
When Should Your Child First Visit the Dentist?
Many parents assume dental visits can wait until their child has a full set of teeth. The current recommendation is actually much earlier. We suggest bringing your child in as soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.
These early appointments aren’t about drilling or treatment. They’re about helping your child feel comfortable in the dental chair, letting us check their teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and giving you practical advice on things like teething, thumb sucking, fluoride and brushing technique. Starting early also means we can spot small issues before they become bigger problems.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) Explained
The CDBS is a federal government program that helps families cover the cost of routine dental care for kids. Eligible children aged 2 to 17 can access up to $1,052 in dental services over 2 years, and at CJ Dentistry, we bulk bill these treatments directly to Medicare.
Your child is generally eligible if your family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A for at least part of the calendar year. Other qualifying payments include Parenting Payment, Carer Payment, Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY. Services Australia will usually send you a letter if your child qualifies, and you can also check eligibility through your myGov account or by calling Medicare on 132 011.
The CDBS covers services such as check-ups, professional cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatments, fissure sealants, fillings, and extractions. It doesn’t cover orthodontic or cosmetic work. If you’re unsure whether your child is eligible or how much they have left to use, our reception team can check the balance for you with your Medicare card details before the appointment.
What Preventive Dental Care Looks Like for Kids
Preventive dentistry is the foundation of every child’s dental visit at our practice. Regular check-ups every six months let us monitor how baby teeth are developing, watch for early signs of decay, and apply protective treatments while the teeth are still healthy.
Common preventive treatments for kids include:
- Routine check-ups and professional cleans to remove plaque your child can’t reach at home
- Fluoride applications to strengthen tooth enamel and reduce decay risk
- Fissure sealants on molars to protect the deep grooves where decay often starts
- Custom mouthguards for kids playing contact sports like rugby, AFL, hockey or netball
- Bite and orthodontic assessment so we can flag any concerns about jaw growth or crowding early
- Brushing and flossing coaching in plain language, your child can actually follow
We also chat with parents about diet, sippy cups, weaning off the bottle and the impact of acidic drinks. Small adjustments at home make a big difference to your child’s long-term oral health.
Choosing the Right Children's Dentist
Not every dental practice is set up for kids, and the difference shows. When you’re choosing a children’s dentist on the Sunshine Coast, a few things genuinely matter:
A child-friendly environment. Our waiting room has a dedicated play area to keep little ones occupied, and our team takes time to explain everything in age-appropriate language. Dr Peter Jorgensen, our principal dentist, particularly enjoys working with younger patients and helping them grow up confident about looking after their teeth.
Experience with anxious kids. Some children take a few visits to settle, and that’s normal. We never rush, and if your child needs to sit in your lap for their first check-up to feel safe, that’s absolutely fine.
A practice that treats the whole family. Booking everyone in together saves time, and kids learn a lot just from watching mum or dad have their own appointment. If your child needs follow-up dental treatment, you won’t be sent across town to another clinic. We handle everything in-house.
Transparent costs. We talk through fees before any treatment begins, process your CDBS or health fund claim on the spot, and offer payment plans if your child needs more involved work.

Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
As soon as their first tooth comes through, or by their first birthday at the latest. Early visits are short and gentle. They give us a chance to check your child’s teeth, gums, and bite while helping your child get used to the dental chair. Starting early is one of the best things you can do for your child’s long-term oral health.
What does the CDBS cover at CJ Dentistry?
Eligible children can access up to $1,052 over two calendar years for general dental services, including check-ups, cleans, x-rays, fluoride treatments, fissure sealants, fillings and extractions. We bulk bill these treatments directly to Medicare, so there are no out-of-pocket costs for covered services. The CDBS doesn’t cover orthodontic or cosmetic treatments. If you’re not sure whether your child qualifies, our reception team can check eligibility and remaining balance using your Medicare card.
How can I help my child feel comfortable at the dentist?
Stay positive when you talk about visits at home, avoid words like “needle” or “pain”, and read picture books about going to the dentist. Bringing your child along to your own check-up is one of the most effective ways to familiarise them with the practice. Our team is experienced with anxious kids and will always go at your child’s pace.
How often should kids visit the dentist?
Every six months for most children. Regular visits let us spot small issues, such as early decay or bite problems, before they become more serious. Kids with a higher risk of decay or undergoing orthodontic treatment may need to come in more often, and we’ll let you know if that applies to your child.
Do you offer mouthguards for kids playing sports?
Yes. Custom-fitted mouthguards offer much better protection than the boil-and-bite kind from the chemist, and they’re more comfortable to wear. We make mouthguards for kids playing rugby league, rugby union, AFL, hockey, netball, basketball and any other contact sport. Book in around the start of the season so your child is protected from the first training run.
