What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that completely covers a damaged or weakened tooth above the gum line. Think of it as a protective helmet for your tooth – it restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance whilst providing long-lasting protection.

Crowns are custom-made to match your natural teeth, ensuring they blend seamlessly with your smile. They’re instrumental when a tooth has been significantly damaged by decay, trauma, or wear, but still has a healthy root structure.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Strength and Protection

Crowns provide exceptional strength to weakened teeth, allowing you to bite and chew normally without worry. They distribute biting forces evenly, preventing further damage to the underlying tooth structure.

Natural Appearance

Modern porcelain crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. We carefully match the colour, translucency, and texture to your existing teeth, ensuring your crown blends perfectly with your smile.

Long-lasting Solution

With proper care, dental crowns can last 10-15 years or longer. They’re designed to withstand the daily pressures of chewing and speaking, making them an excellent long-term investment in your oral health.

Versatile Treatment

Crowns can address multiple dental issues, from protecting a tooth after root canal treatment to improving the appearance of severely discoloured or misshapen teeth.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

We may recommend a dental crown if you have:

  • Large fillings that compromise the tooth’s structural integrity
  • Cracked or fractured teeth that need protection from further damage
  • Severely worn teeth from grinding or acid erosion
  • Teeth after root canal treatment that require protection
  • Cosmetic concerns with severely discoloured or misshapen teeth
  • Dental implants that need a crown restoration

During your consultation, we’ll thoroughly examine your teeth and discuss whether a crown is the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation.

Our Dental Crown Process

Initial Consultation

We begin with a comprehensive examination, including X-rays if necessary, to assess the condition of your tooth and surrounding structures. We’ll explain your treatment options and answer any questions you might have.

Tooth Preparation

The tooth is carefully prepared by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the crown. We take detailed impressions to ensure your crown fits perfectly and matches your bite.

Temporary Crown

Whilst your permanent crown is being crafted, we’ll place a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth and maintain your appearance.

Crown Placement

Once your custom crown is ready, we’ll remove the temporary crown and carefully fit your new permanent crown. We’ll make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper fit and comfort before permanently cementing it in place.

Types of Dental Crowns We Offer

Porcelain Crowns

Our most popular option, porcelain crowns, offers excellent aesthetics and durability. These crowns fall under the broader category of all-ceramic crowns, making them ideal for front teeth where a natural, seamless appearance is especially important.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns

These crowns combine the strength of metal with the natural appearance of porcelain, making them ideal for back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces.

All-Ceramic Crowns

Metal-free crowns that offer superior aesthetics and are an excellent choice for patients with metal sensitivities.

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns are known for their exceptional strength and long-lasting performance. They are a reliable option for back teeth, where durability is more important than appearance.

We’ll help you choose the most appropriate crown material based on the location of your tooth, your aesthetic preferences, and your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care and regular dental check-ups, dental crowns typically last 10-15 years. Some crowns can last even longer, depending on the material used, your oral hygiene habits, and factors like teeth grinding.

Is getting a dental crown painful?

The crown procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment. Some mild sensitivity or discomfort may occur after the anaesthetic wears off, but this typically resolves within a few days.

How do I know if I need a crown instead of a filling?

Crowns are typically recommended when a tooth has extensive damage that a filling cannot adequately address. If more than half of your tooth structure is compromised, or if you have a large existing filling that’s failing, a crown may be the better long-term solution.

Can I eat normally with a dental crown?

Yes, once your permanent crown is placed and you’ve adjusted to it, you should be able to eat normally. However, it’s wise to avoid very hard foods like ice or hard lollies that could potentially damage the crown.

Will my crown look natural?

Modern dental crowns, particularly porcelain ones, are designed to match your natural teeth very closely. We carefully select the colour and shape to ensure your crown blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.

What happens if my crown falls off?

If your crown comes loose or falls off, contact us immediately. Keep the crown safe and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. In most cases, we can re-cement the crown if it’s undamaged and fits properly.
