Porcelain vs Composite Veneers: Which Option Suits You?
At CJ Dentistry, we work with two veneer materials: porcelain and composite resin. They are not interchangeable. Each has trade-offs in cost, longevity, appearance and how much of the natural tooth needs to be prepared.
Porcelain Veneers
The trade-off is that fitting porcelain veneers usually involves removing a small amount of enamel, typically around half a millimetre, from the front surface of the tooth. This preparation is generally not reversible. Porcelain cases also run over two or three appointments rather than one. With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last around ten years, and in some cases longer. Individual results vary based on oral hygiene, diet and habits such as grinding.
Composite Veneers
Composite veneers are built up directly onto your teeth using a tooth coloured resin, layer by layer, in a single appointment. Because the dentist works freehand in the chair, composite is well-suited to smaller cosmetic adjustments: a chipped corner, a single stained tooth, a narrow gap between two front teeth.
Composite veneers are generally less expensive than porcelain, require minimal preparation of the natural tooth, and are repairable. A later chip can usually be added to without replacing the whole veneer. The trade-offs are appearance and lifespan: composite stains more readily than porcelain over time, and typically lasts around four to eight years before it needs polishing, touching up or replacing.
The Veneer Treatment Process at Our Sunshine Coast Practice
Most porcelain veneer cases at CJ Dentistry run across two to three appointments over four to six weeks. Composite veneers are usually completed in a single visit. Here is what the process looks like, step by step.
1. Consultation and assessment
Your first appointment is a thorough dental examination. The dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite, takes photographs, and may take digital scans or x-rays. By the end of this appointment, you should have a written treatment plan and a clear understanding of what is involved.
2. Planning and shade selection
For porcelain veneers, planning includes choosing the shape, length and shade of the final result. Many patients prefer a result that looks like a well-cared-for natural set of teeth rather than an obviously cosmetic finish.
3. Tooth preparation
On the preparation day, a small amount of enamel is removed from the front surface of each tooth receiving a porcelain veneer, usually under local anaesthetic. Impressions or digital scans are sent to the dental laboratory. Temporary veneers may be placed while the porcelain ones are being made. For composite veneers, there is generally minimal or no enamel preparation, and the dentist moves straight into the next step.
4. Fitting and bonding
Porcelain veneers are returned from the lab and trial-fitted before the final bond. Once you and the dentist are happy with the fit, each veneer is bonded to the tooth using dental cement and cured with a light. Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth, cured layer by layer, then shaped and polished. Either way, the dentist checks your bite carefully before you leave.
5. Review
A short follow-up appointment a week or two later lets the dentist check how the veneers are settling and make any small adjustments. From there, your veneers become part of your regular six-monthly check-up and clean.
